Abstract

Lombok is known as a very religious society and the tuan guru as religious leaders play an important role in the local community as well as in marriage because marriage is regarded as the basic building block of Islamic tradition and Muslim society. However, unfortunately in Lombok there is a high rate of divorce and of domestic violence. This article aims to map the interpretation of tuan guru of various marriage hadiths which are discussed in public religious sermons and the implications of these interpretations on the practice of marriage in the Sasak community in Lombok. The diversity of the Islamic textual interpretation not only depends on internal factors but also external factors that are influenced by the socio-cultural-historical context of Muslim society. Using an Islamic feminist approach, I show that 50 hadiths used to discuss marriage are interpreted based on the interest of the tuan guru and the local community in legitimating Sasak patriarchal culture. The rights of the husband and wife are interpreted in a gender biased manner. This article confirms previous research that Islamic textual interpretation has an effect on gender injustice in the marriage tradition of the Sasak. I argue that the patriarchal values in Muslim society are not only influenced by the interpretation of the religious text but also by the social, economic, educational, and political aspects. However, there are some tuan guru whose interpretations also criticize patriarchal customs and who provide a model of gender equality as an ideal Islamic marriage, indicating that traditional ideas about marriage are being challenged by more progressive ideas. This research contributes to describing Muslim women’s agency in fighting patriarchal culture.
