Abstract

ABSATRAK The highland Dou Mbawa people of Sumbawa Island in eastern In nesia faced considerable challenges as a result of policies introdu by the Soeharto regime that constrained citizens to possess one of religions officially recogn ised by the state. Dou Mbawa communif had variously adopted Christianity and Isla m while simultaneo maintaining older; widely shared beliefs concerning ancestors kn as Parafu. The new circumstances resu1ted in the Dou Mbawa fessing multiple sources of cultu ral-re ligious identity and the d lopment of a pluralistic but ambiguous social unity, with tension tween religious groups somet imes leading to outbreaks of comm violence. It is against this background that the practice of the an rn Raju ceremony, which involves both Muslims and Christians (Pro tants and Catholics) can be understood as playing a key social Ii in strengthening the collective religious life of the Dou Mbawa their identity as a distinct group. This is despite issues of religi'orthodoxy increasingly emerging as a critical area of contemporary contestation in Sumbawa among the politically dominant lowland Mu.slim majority, who have a proselytising presence. This study ex­ plores the Ra ju ritual as a publicspace and context of interaction that IS legitimated by ideas of shared heritage and which, while not free of dynamics of contestation and rivalry, nevert heless sustain multi -re­ ligious re latio ns as a defining featu re of Dou Mbawa social relations, reducing the potential for inter-religiouscommunal conflicts
