Abstract

ENGLISH The community art traditions of Lombok are surprisingly little understood, considering the island’s proximity within sight of Bali across the Lombok Straits and the historical evidence for its dynamic participation in the pesisir (coastal) world of the archipelago in the early modern era, from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. During this period, Lombok communities engaged with the prosperous littoral polities that were centres of religion and culture on East Java and Bali, as well as on coastal Sumbawa and South Sulawesi. In seeking to meaningfully understand the art, we must contextualise it within this cultural pluralism, nurtured by the maritime networks of the pesisir. The elegance of textiles like Sacred cloth (kekombong or lempot umbaq) (fig. 21.1) challenge us to more deeply appreciate the art of Lombok, which is almost the size of Bali but which more often has been perceived as its lesser, backward, relative across the Straits.
