Reinforcing rivalry among religious groups since the reform era has placed Islamic education as a dissemination and contestation tool of the formation of ideological identity. The reformation with democratitation since 1998 give a space and an opportunity for growing of the Islamic gropus whether transnational, national or local movements. This circumstance has a contribution to intensify a contestation among the Islamic groups to gain religious and political otorities. This has an implication on Islamic education learning cultural. The Islamic schools tend to be a place for transmiting of indoctrinational perspective which are based on truth and salvation claim. The movements have a tendency to blame and negate one another through the formal Islamic education. This study is a field research which focused on how ideological contestation in forming ideological identity among the Islamic groups. These issues were cognitive framework which employed phenomenology and sociology approaches. The supporters of these ideas were a theory of apparatus ideology by Louis Althusser and a theory of contestation by Antje Wiener.
Based on the empirical tendency of Islamic education in Lombok, this research revealed that even though Islamic educational institutions have been transformed and integrated into national educational system, they still become contestation tools to form ideological identity. Integration was not only forced by the desire of modernization, and to gain acknowledge and financial support from the state, but also ideological interests of each religious groups. In this situation, Islamic education is required to fulfill academic expectation and socio-religious expectation, and also ideological expectations. Ideologically, Islamic groups more stronger on controling Islamic education orientation than state. This impacted on internal rivalry which brought Islamic schoolings to keep, if not to enforce social fragmentation faced by Moslem community. It is very descent to say that Islamic education in many aspects tended to more represent expectation of religious group than academic professionalism as an academic institution.
