Abstract

ENGLISH This study aims to compare the Fe concentration and the characteristics of the electrical properties of river and coastal iron sand garnered in Pringgabaya District. Iron sand samples are taken with a variation of the distance by 2 m from a distance of 2 m to 10 m. These samples were separated with impurities using permanent magnets. The samples were then washed using distilled water and were dried for two hours at 100 0C. The characterization of the Fe concentration of river and coastal iron sand was carried out using AAS. The resistivity value was measured using the 2-point probe method, and the dielectric constant was measured using the parallel plate method. The Fe concentartion of river iron sand increased from 5.03 ppm at a distance of 2 m from the river to 9.52 ppm at a distance of 10 m. While the iron concentration of the beach iron sand rose from 5.64 ppm at a distance of 2 m from the coastline to 9.8 ppm at a distance of 10 m. In the measurement of resistivity, the resistivity value of river iron sand rose from 5.4 × 104 Ωm at a distance of 2 m from the river mouth to 11 × 104 Ωm at a distance of 10 m. Coastal iron sand resistivity also increased from 6.8 × 104 Ωm from a distance of 2 m from the coastline to 10.9 × 104 Ωm from a distance of 10 m. In the measurement of dielectric constant, the value of river iron sand dielectric constant increased from 5.37 × 104 at a distance of 2 m from the river to 13.88 × 104 at a distance of 10 m. The dielectric constant of the coastal iron sand also increased from 6.02 × 104 from a distance of 2 m from the coastline to 15.22 × 104 at a distance of 10 m. The difference of Fe concentration in the river and coastal iron sand is caused by the presence of Fe deposition in rivers which causes the Fe concentartion of river iron sand to be greater than the coastal one. The measurement of resistivity and dielectric constant values showed the same pattern; there was an increase in terms of the resistivity value and the dielectric constant of the river and coastal iron sand along with the greater distance at which the iron sand was taken. By and large, the resistivity value and dielectric constant of the coastal iron sand are greater when compared to the river iron sand. This is due to the iron sand from rivers that flow to the coast will spread evenly and will be followed by the mixture of other mineral contents
