Abstract

INDONESIA Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji proses dan arah transformasi identitas serta konstruksi komunikasi tunanetra yang mengalami kebutaan di usia dewasa. Penelitian kualitatif bertradisi fenomenologi ini menjadikan dua puluh lima orang tunanetra penghuni Panti Sosial Bina Netra (PSBN) yata Guna Bandung sebagai informan. Data diperoleh dengan cara wawancara mendalam, pengamatan berperanserta, dan studi dokumentasi, di mana analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa; pertama, perubahan kondisi fisik yang radikal dari awas menjadi tunanetra tidak diikuti oleh perubahan identitas psikis (transformasi identitas) secara cepat dan mulus. Transformasi identitas berlangsung fluktuatif dengan melewati lima tahapan transformasi yaitu; gegar diri, isolasi diri, membuka diri, membenahi diri, dan mengabdikan diri. Penerimaan identitas tunanetra yang belum seutuhnya membuat proses transformasi identitas berlangsung fluktuatif. Oleh karena itu, transformasi identitas tunanetra adalah transformasi yang belum selesai dan masih terus berproses; kedua, meskipun secara fisik beridentitas tunanetra, Para tunanetra masih menjadikan identitas awas dan orang awas sebagai referensi dan tujuan hidup yang diinginkan, dengan melakukan awasisasi sebagai upaya meraih identitas awas secara subjektif; ketiga, kebutaan berimplikasi pada perubahan pola komunikasi tunanetra, sehingga mereka melakukan konstruksi komunikasi yang relevan dengan kondisi fisik, kebutuhan praktis, suasana psikis, dan motif subjektifnya sebagai tunanetra. Disfungsi mata membuat komunikasi tunanetra lebih didominasi komunikasi sentuhan dan komunikasi verbal lisan. Tunanetra membatasi komunikasi interpersonal di saat kepercayaan dirinya sebagai tunanetra menurun, namun pada saat bersamaan justru komunikasi transendental lebih intensif. Sebaliknya, di kala penerimaan diri mulai membaik, yang ditandai dengan keputusan untuk berinteraksi secara sosial dan tingginya volume aktivitas keduniaan, tunanetra engintensifkan komunikasi interpersonalnya dan pada saat bersamaan komunikasi transendentalnya tidak intensif lagi; empat, tunanetra melakukan pengelolaan kesan terutama di saat tingkat penerimaan dirinya menurun, dengan cara menampilkan diri sedemikian rupa sehingga terkesan sebagai orang awas, yang merupakan kondisi fisik dan citra diri yang diinginkannya. Tunanetra menggunakan dua strategi pengelolaan kesan yaitu penggunaan dan atau penanggalan personal front dan melibatkan significant others sebagai tim pengelolaan kesan. ENGLISH The study is not only aimed to analyze the process and the pattern of identity transformation, but also communication construction of the blind people who have become blind in adult life. The author employed a qualitative approach in the tradition of Phenomenology, and then the author has purposively chosen twenty five blind people participants from “Panti Sosial Bina Netra (PSBN) Wyata Guna Bandung” as the informants of the study. In addition, the author employed techniques such as in-depth interview, participatory observation, and documentation study. Moreover, the data analysis is conducted in descriptive qualitative The result of the study showed that there are four conclusions taken from the study; first, the radical change of physical condition from normalsighted to their current condition (visually impaired) is not followed by the fast and flawless change of psychological identity (identity transformation). It goes on through five-stages of transformation, they are; internal shock, selfisolation, self-openness, self-improvement, and self subjugate. The less selfacceptance of blind people made the process of identity transformation as a lifetime work in process. Second, although they are blind people, still by performing “awasisasi”, they are having their frame of thinking and attitude as if they are a normal person in order to subjectively achieve their normalsighted identity. They are performing “awasisasi” because the blind people considers the normal-sighted identity as their ideal life. Third, blindness affected change of the blinds’ communication pattern. In that case, they have to adapt their social construction of reality that is relevant with their physical, psychological, subjective motive and practical needs. Eyes malfunction made their communication dominated by verbal and touch communication. The blind people limited their interpersonal communication whenever they had a lack of self-confidence, but at the same time, they performed transcendental communication more intensively. In the contrary, when they are able to accept the reality of their condition, they can increase the intensity of their interpersonal communication, but they acquired their transcendental communication less than before. Forth, whenever they had a lack of self-acceptance, the blind people performed an impression management which manages themselves as if they are one of the normalsighted. Moreever, they conducted two strategies of impression management known as the employing and/or removing personal front and involving significant others as an impression management team.
